2015 蜜桃传媒-Webb Alumna聽Shares Journey of Grief and Trust in God鈥檚 Plan聽

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擨n the face of deep loss, Katelyn Shepherd Williams, a 2015 alumna of 蜜桃传媒, has learned to trust God with her story. Her faith was tested in 2025 when her 24-year-old brother died from injuries sustained in a car accident.

鈥淚 was deeply grieved, but also just so angry,鈥 reflected Williams, of Winston-Salem, N.C. 鈥淢y parents were deeply grieved. It was just me and my brother; there’s no other siblings.鈥

Sharing her testimony during a GWU Dimensions program, Williams explained to the students how she wrestled with questions of faith and fairness. 鈥淚 was like, 鈥楪od, we’ve been faithful to you,鈥欌 she began. 鈥溾榊ou know, we’ve loved you. We’ve been devoted. We’ve served in the church all our lives. We’ve never had a moment where we ran from you and had a rebellious period that we had to come back that you’re teaching us this lesson. How could this happen?鈥欌

Katelyn reading book

As Williams kept searching, God began to reveal his goodness. 鈥淎bout a week after the accident, we got a message from a woman on Facebook,鈥 she shared. 鈥淪he said, 鈥業 live right outside of the crash site. I sat with him and stayed with him so that he wasn’t alone.鈥 She was a gift to our family, and God was intentional to let us know that piece of the story.鈥

Working through her grief, Williams realized God was moving in other ways. 鈥淢y husband and I set intentions at the beginning of every year, goals for ourselves,鈥 she explained. 鈥淥ne of those was to draw more people to the Lord. We didn’t know what that looked like specifically.鈥

Her brother pursued many different interests and had made friends through collecting Pokemon cards and sharing his enthusiasm for muscle cars. More than 400 people attended the funeral. 鈥淲e met so many different people from so many walks of life that he was able to touch,鈥 she observed. 鈥淚 just have to believe that some of those people heard Jesus proclaimed for the first time and walked away with a deeper knowledge of him. I said, 鈥楪od, I didn’t intend to make disciples like this. This was not my goal, but I can tell that you鈥檙e intentional.鈥欌

The experience deepened and affirmed how Williams understands Scripture. She believes that the Bible is not a collection of isolated stories, but a single, intentional narrative revealing God鈥檚 faithfulness across every season. She described how God continually showed up for people in the Old Testament and then throughout the New Testament. He never left them. 鈥淕od wastes nothing, no situation, no words,鈥 she explained. 鈥淭he more you read scripture, every word is so intentional. He didn’t put that there by accident. We waste words as humans, but God does not.鈥

Her faith journey began early, shaped by a strong Christian upbringing. That foundation deepened at a church summer camp, where journaling led her to seek a more personal understanding of God鈥檚 voice. After returning home, she continued growing through church and youth group involvement. She chose to attend 蜜桃传媒-Webb, drawn by its welcoming community and Christ-centered mission.

Williams immersed herself fully in academics, spiritual life, and the GWU campus community. A religion class centered on spiritual disciplines proved transformative. A book assigned in the course, 鈥淐elebration of Discipline鈥 by Richard J. Foster, stays on her nightstand. 鈥淚t just radically changed how I looked at all the things I had been taught my entire life,鈥 she noted. 鈥淲hat does it look like to fast? To meditate on God鈥檚 word?鈥

Her search for answers led to late nights spent in the Dover Chapel prayer room. 鈥淚 remember praying really big prayers, asking some hard questions of God, and crying there knowing it was a safe place to do that,鈥 Williams related.

Beyond spiritual and academic growth, she also met her husband, Rodney, at 蜜桃传媒-Webb. The relationship began during their first week on campus. 鈥淲e were both from Winston-Salem and came two hours away to meet at 蜜桃传媒-Webb,鈥 she observed.

After earning her master鈥檚 degree in counseling from UNC-Greensboro, Williams embraced what she describes as a 鈥渕ulti-passionate鈥 calling that blended her many interests.

鈥淚 knew I loved words. I knew I loved kids. I knew I loved teaching,鈥 she stated. 鈥淎s a kid, I loved being that listening ear, the friend who gives you advice. I took the pieces of what I wanted, and all those things came together in being a school counselor, which was really beautiful and special to me.鈥

She helps students navigate anxiety, self-doubt, and identity. 鈥淚 tell kids that sometimes we have to trick our brain because whatever we think the most, our brain believes,鈥 Williams explained. 鈥淲ords are powerful. Say those things that are positive, and at some point, your brain will believe them, and you’ll act accordingly.鈥

book cover katelyn

That same emphasis on words extends beyond counseling into her personal passions. Williams discovered a love for writing as a child, often creating stories as gifts for family members, though it took years to fully embrace her talent. Her children鈥檚 book, 鈥淲hat Can Brown Girls Do?鈥, was written in 2017 but remained tucked away until she rediscovered it years later and published in 2026.

The inspiration for the story came from a deeply personal place: seeing a Disney princess who reflected her identity. 鈥淚 was so excited about it, because I had never seen a Disney princess that looked like me,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t made me kind of reflect on the other times in life that I wanted to do something, but I didn’t see someone that looked like me or that had my skill set or was my age that did it, and so maybe I wrote it off as it wasn’t for me.鈥

Today, the book is impacting children in unexpected ways. At one reading, a young girl with a disability shared how the story helped reshape her view of her own limitations. 鈥淚t just makes me think that there is absolutely nothing that I can鈥檛 do,鈥 the child said, affirming for Williams that the message extends far beyond its original intent.

Moments like that reinforce what she shared at Dimensions: God鈥檚 story is intentional, and every person has a place within it. Reflecting on her journey, Williams said, 鈥淪eeing the different pieces of my life over time鈥攖he jobs I鈥檝e had, the interests I鈥檝e had, the passions I鈥檝e had鈥擥od is saying, 鈥楾he way that I made you was intentional.鈥欌

Through Training, Bold Conversations, and Cross-Cultural Connection, Students Discovered Confidence in Sharing Their Faith

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擳his trip was different,鈥 shared Dr. Josh Parrott, 蜜桃传媒-Webb vice president and university chaplain for Christian Life and Service. 鈥淭his was heavy gospel ministry鈥攅vangelism, prayer walking, and sharing testimonies.鈥

Focused on those priorities, a 10-member team spent a week in San Francisco, Argentina, partnering with SCORE International missionary Kelly Kemp. Rather than traditional service projects, the group built meaningful connections.

Parrott was joined by Stacy Simmons, associate minister to the University for Pastoral Care, four May graduates and four rising sophomores. The trip aligned with the Office of Christian Life and Service鈥檚 goal to reach five new countries by 2030. Parrott noted, 鈥淲e looked at the map to see where 蜜桃传媒-Webb has never been and said, 鈥楲et鈥檚 go take the gospel there and mobilize our students to fulfill the Great Commission.鈥 Argentina was first.鈥

Kemp has centered her ministry on evangelism and discipleship in Argentina since 2012. Working through her church and community contacts, she helped design a trip emphasizing personal outreach.

蜜桃传媒-Webb students visited children in the English Institutes, told them about 蜜桃传媒-Webb and America, and gave them GWU stickers.

Students spent time in English Institutes, engaging children in conversation while sharing about life in North Carolina. They also connected with university students, discovering shared challenges and experiences across cultures. Additional outreach included attending the church鈥檚 soccer league, where team members shared their testimonies between games. They distributed invitations to church events to the people they encountered during the week.

This trip was a first for Morgan Lilly, a May graduate with a degree in English education. 鈥淚 am so glad I was able to go on this trip,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 learned so much and, more importantly, got to serve others.鈥 One of Lilly鈥檚 most meaningful experiences occurred in a local park, where Argentine culture encourages community gatherings. Lilly and teammate Aslin Turner, a rising sophomore, prayed with a teenage girl. 鈥淲e met her while inviting people to a church event, and the conversation just grew from there,鈥 Lilly informed.

蜜桃传媒-Webb team members participated in several
outreach opportunities in Argentina.

Parrott and 蜜桃传媒-Webb graduate Isaiah LaNave also spent time with two addiction recovery ministries for men. LaNave shared his testimony. 鈥淛osh and I had the opportunity to meet and interact with a drug addiction recovery life group the church led, and it gave me a glimpse into what true biblical brotherhood ought to be,鈥 LaNave reflected. 鈥淓very man there had a story of brokenness and despair, but also the hope they shared together as new creations in Christ.鈥 He was moved by how the group cared for each other. 鈥淭hey loved each other with a love that can only come from having an encounter with the living God and being brought from death to life,鈥 he described.

Preparation played a key role in the team鈥檚 outreach. Beginning five months before the trip, the team met regularly for training, learning to clearly share both their testimonies and the gospel message in just 15 seconds each. Once in Argentina, they continued refining those conversations in real time. Students learned to present their stories in three parts: life before faith, how they encountered Jesus, and life afterward.

Isaiah LaNave shares his testimony.

As the team spent time meeting and talking to people throughout the city, LaNave said he was intimidated at first. However, his fears began to fade as he relied on God and what he had learned during pre-trip training. 鈥淲hen you initiate with vulnerability, people are surprisingly open to share their story,鈥 LaNave explained. 鈥淚n our case, many of them showed true interest in the hope in Christ we were able to share with them.鈥

One conversation he had in a park lasted 30 minutes as he talked with someone his own age about purpose and faith. The person shared openly about his beliefs, and LaNave talked about his hope in Christ. 鈥淚 think if nothing else that experience made the trip worth it to me,鈥 LaNave said, noting that he exchanged phone numbers with the person and plans to keep in touch.

Parrott said moments like those were among the most encouraging parts of the trip. 鈥淭he fun part of this for me, and I think for Stacy, was to watch our students, who had never done this kind of cold call evangelism before 鈥 to see them in their uneasiness go forward, encourage, and remember that God is with us, and he’s a shield, he’s a helper,鈥 Parrott affirmed. 鈥淭his is the greatest news in the history of the world. Let’s go tell them.鈥

Beyond structured outreach, the team experienced Argentina鈥檚 strong sense of community. Chloe French, a nursing student from Paradise, Mont., said one of her favorite memories came after a young adult church event, when the group gathered in a local home. 鈥淲e visited around the crowded table sharing our testimonies and varying life experiences, drinking the Argentine traditional drink, mate, recounting the events of the day, and just enjoying each other鈥檚 company until the early hours of the morning,鈥 French described. 鈥淭his is how the Argentines prefer to fellowship, and it was a joy to take part in.鈥

French remarked on the openness of the people they encountered, which made conversations about faith feel natural. 鈥淚 went into it with more curiosity than expectations and trusted that God would give me the words to speak,鈥 French acknowledged. 鈥淯ltimately, I am just a tool in His hand and what I say can plant seeds in others鈥 lives that I may never know.鈥

argentina mission services trip christian life
蜜桃传媒-Webb students participated in the
church service.

The experience is already influencing future mission efforts, with training models from Argentina being applied to upcoming teams serving both locally and internationally. LaNave encourages other students to get involved, even if they feel unprepared. 鈥淢y advice to anyone considering going on a mission trip with 蜜桃传媒-Webb would be to make the time and God will make a way,鈥 he asserted. 鈥淚f you鈥檙e worried about being under-qualified that鈥檚 exactly how I felt.鈥

LaNave has been on six mission trips with 蜜桃传媒-Webb teams. Through each one, he learned that commitment matters more than experience. 鈥淭he more you鈥檙e willing to give of your time and talent the more God will show you that it鈥檚 much less of your own ability and much more of His ability to work through a willing heart,鈥 LaNave said.

Though the goal is always to serve others, LaNave said the impact often comes full circle. 鈥淲ith every trip I went on,鈥 he shared, 鈥淚 hoped to be a blessing to other people, and every single time I felt more blessed by those I came to help.

Dr. Stephanie Austin-Campbell Accepts Teaching Role and Presents Research at International Conference

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擶ithin six months of completing the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) at 蜜桃传媒, Dr. Stephanie Austin-Campbell accepted a full-time faculty position at Georgia College and State University in Athens, Ga. Less than a year into her new role, she was invited to present her dissertation, 鈥淩isky Business: Executive Compensation Attributes and Enterprise Risk Management,鈥 at the Academy of Business Research (ABR). The conference brings together scholars and practitioners from around the world to exchange ideas and collaborate.

She was honored, enthusiastic and humbled to participate and represent Georgia College and her alma mater at the ABR conference. Beyond presenting her research, the conference allowed her to connect with scholars who share similar interests, fostering the potential for future collaborative initiatives.

Her research examines executive compensation, particularly for Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) and Chief Financial Officers (CFOs). It explores how these incentives influence the management of firm-wide risk in the banking industry. 鈥淭his area of research is especially significant because the banking sector represents one of the most volatile yet essential industries in the global economy,鈥 Austin-Campbell noted. 鈥淪enior executives must maintain a strong awareness of organizational and market conditions to ensure that risks are managed effectively and responsibly. Failure to do so can contribute to severe economic consequences, such as the global financial crisis most notably experienced in 2008.鈥

Stephanie austin presents

Austin-Campbell said one of the most valuable aspects of her experience was receiving feedback from scholars around the world. She also attended sessions aligned with her academic and professional interests, gaining insight into a variety of teaching approaches.

鈥淭hrough these sessions, I had the opportunity to engage with individuals from diverse geographical and cultural backgrounds and learn more about their instructional approaches and teaching styles,鈥 Austin-Campbell said. 鈥淭hese interactions broadened my perspective on effective pedagogical strategies and reinforced the value of collaborative learning within the global academic community.鈥

While her research continues to evolve, Austin-Campbell now applies these insights in the classroom. At Georgia College, she teaches Principles of Management and Freshman Seminar courses, and during the summer, she also teaches at Athens Technical College.

Before enrolling in the DBA program at 蜜桃传媒-Webb, Austin-Campbell had served in higher education administrative and teaching roles for nearly three decades. When the timing was right to take the next step in her career, she started exploring doctoral programs to strengthen both her academic credentials and professional opportunities. Her search led to 蜜桃传媒-Webb.

Linda takes Stephanie's picture at conference

鈥淎lthough I live near a major flagship university, I was seeking a doctoral program that would provide a high-quality education while also allowing me to complete the degree within a structured and defined timeframe,鈥 she explained. 鈥淚 ultimately selected 蜜桃传媒-Webb because it aligned well with my academic and professional goals.鈥

蜜桃传媒-Webb鈥檚 DBA program is 60 credit hours with concentrations in accounting, economics, finance, international business, management and marketing. Students who maintain full-time status can complete the program in nine consecutive semesters. The curriculum emphasizes both technical expertise and leadership, preparing graduates to become effective educators, innovative thinkers and ethical decision-makers.

A defining feature of the program is its emphasis on personalized learning and individualized support, said Dr. Christine Sutton, associate dean, associate professor of business administration and the program鈥檚 director. 鈥淭he professors in 蜜桃传媒-Webb’s DBA program work diligently to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to produce quality scholarly research,鈥 Sutton stated.

Austin-Campbell affirmed that faculty mentorship was a key component of her success. 鈥淓very faculty member with whom I interacted played a pivotal role in that process,鈥 she observed. 鈥淚 could not have accomplished this milestone without their unwavering support, guidance, and encouragement.鈥

Austin-Campbell described the program as both 鈥渞igorous and rewarding, requiring students to effectively balance academic responsibilities with personal and professional obligations.鈥 She encouraged current and prospective students to fully engage with faculty and peers. 鈥淭he support, mentorship, and collaborative learning environment are instrumental to both academic success and professional growth,鈥 she stated.

Sutton commended Austin-Campbell for maximizing the benefits of the program in pursuit of her goals. 鈥淒r. Austin-Campbell worked tirelessly while she was a student in the DBA program,鈥 she asserted. 鈥淲e are proud of her many accomplishments since earning her doctoral degree from 蜜桃传媒-Webb in December of 2024.鈥

Stephanie Headshot
Dr. Stephanie Austin-Campbell

While completing the degree equipped Austin-Campbell with credentials to advance her career, she also strengthened her professional confidence. 鈥淚 have long aspired to become a tenured professor and, potentially, transition into a higher-level administrative role in the future,鈥 she reflected. 鈥淩oles that had once seemed beyond my reach now appear attainable.鈥

Drawing on her experience as both a student and a teacher, Austin-Campbell brings a heightened sense of empathy to the classroom. She understands firsthand the challenges students face as they balance academic expectations with personal and professional responsibilities.

鈥淚 remain committed to sharing knowledge with students who are navigating their own academic journeys in order to help them achieve their highest level of success,鈥 she said. 鈥淥ne of the most important lessons emphasized throughout my doctoral studies was the importance of proper academic and scholarly writing, which serves as a foundational element of higher education and research.鈥

Looking ahead, Austin-Campbell remains focused on continued growth. She plans to collaborate with colleagues to expand her dissertation research and publish in scholarly journals while refining her effectiveness in the classroom.

鈥淥ver the next three to four years, I plan to systematically compile and document scholarly contributions for inclusion in my tenure and promotion portfolio, with the objective of being fully prepared to apply for tenure and promotion by my fifth year,鈥 she emphasized. 鈥淢y goal is to contribute both to the advancement of knowledge within the discipline and to the development and success of future students through high-quality teaching and mentorship.鈥

Become more in your career with 蜜桃传媒-Webb鈥檚 DBA program.

Take the next step by contacting Blake Elizalde at welizalde@gardner-webb.edu or Dr. Christine Sutton at ccsutton@gardner-webb.edu.

Apply by July 31 for fall admission.

Pharmacist Nathan Roberts鈥 Experience in Rural Healthcare Access Positioned Him for Service on 13-Member Board

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擲ince graduating from 蜜桃传媒鈥慦ebb University 12 years ago, pharmacist Nathan Roberts has expanded his skill set, taken on increasing responsibility, and demonstrated a clear capacity for leadership. His impact drew the attention of his company, CVS Health, and the notice of N.C. Governor Josh Stein, who tapped Roberts to serve on the state鈥檚 13-member Commission for Public Health.

The Commission is authorized and directed by the N.C. General Assembly to adopt rules to protect and promote the health of the public. Four of its members are elected by the North Carolina Medical Society and nine are appointed by the governor. Members include representatives from medicine, veterinary medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, optometry, and engineering.

Nathan Roberts Headshot
Nathan Roberts

Roberts doesn鈥檛 know for sure, but he suspects his employer recommended him for the Commission. He noted that one of the most pressing challenges facing the N.C. Department of Public Health is providing access to care for residents in rural North Carolina.

As a district manager over the past three years, Roberts has overseen 60 different stores, in both metropolitan and rural areas. He visits stores, troubleshoots, pores over customer-service, efficiency and compliance data, and generally makes sure that the stores are running well and that employees are engaged and happy.

In September 2024, Roberts served pharmacies in Boone, Spruce Pine and West Jefferson, towns that were devasted by Hurricane Helene. 鈥淚 don’t know this for a fact, but I think I got nominated from that perspective,鈥 he reflected. 鈥淚 saw firsthand how lack of patient access can lead to really difficult situations. We had stores that didn鈥檛 have power for days. Just seeing how that impacted the community and how much the community needed us opened my eyes to how much the profession of pharmacy is needed and how we have to maintain access throughout all the challenges we might face.鈥

Roberts entered the pharmacy profession to fulfill a calling he鈥檚 had from an early age. 鈥淚 knew I wanted a career centered on helping and caring for others, even though I wasn鈥檛 initially sure what path to take,鈥 he related. 鈥淚 was first introduced to pharmacy by my brother-in-law, Dustin Hayes, who is a pharmacist. He encouraged me to explore the profession and suggested I start by gaining hands-on experience while I was a student at 蜜桃传媒鈥慦ebb.鈥

During his junior year, he obtained his first job as a pharmacy technician at a community pharmacy. 鈥淭hrough that experience, I discovered how much I valued patient interaction and the meaningful relationships pharmacists build with their patients,鈥 he acknowledged. 鈥淚 saw firsthand the impact pharmacists make every day through counseling, education, and accessibility. Pharmacists are among the most accessible healthcare professionals, and witnessing that role in action solidified my decision. Pharmacy allowed me to combine my passion for patient care with the opportunity to make a direct and lasting difference in people鈥檚 lives.鈥

His decision to come to 蜜桃传媒-Webb was influenced by family鈥攈is grandfather and parents are alumni, and his older sister, GWU Instructor of Nursing Tara Hayes, was a student at the time. His father, Chris Roberts, also taught one year at 蜜桃传媒-Webb.

Ultimately, the choice was his to make and shaped by his own experiences on the close-knit campus. 鈥淚 knew that I was going to get the attention from my professors that I needed to be successful,鈥 Roberts shared.

That level of personal attention stands out to him even more now as he listens to pharmacy students who work for CVS Health talk about their difficulty with organic chemistry. 鈥淚’m not saying organic chemistry was easy for me, but what made organic chemistry fun and not as challenging was the relationship that I had with Dr. (Benjamin) Brooks,鈥 Roberts asserted. 鈥淗e wanted us to be successful, and his one-on-one time helped.鈥

Science Academy

Roberts became a chemistry lab assistant and this experience gave him more hands-on opportunities to learn the subject. 鈥淲hen I figured out that I actually did a pretty good job at organic chemistry, it motivated me,鈥 he noted. 鈥淏rooks definitely pushes his students to do well, and it helped me want to go into a science direction with my career.鈥

While he could have left 蜜桃传媒-Webb after two years to enter pharmacy school, Roberts said the decision to stay for all four years made a lasting difference. He noted that his third and fourth years proved especially formative, helping him develop structure, discipline, and strong relationship鈥慴uilding skills.

Those same habits now guide how he prepares for meetings, connects with his teams, and leads across multiple locations as a pharmacy district leader. 鈥淚 have to study for my job before I walk into a store,鈥 Roberts said. 鈥淚 have to be prepared and know what I鈥檓 talking about.鈥

Likewise, as a member of the Commission, Roberts studies the topics they will discuss and vote on before each meeting. The board meets once every quarter, plus any special sessions necessary to tackle timely topics.

After graduating in 2014 from 蜜桃传媒-Webb with a degree in biology and a minor in chemistry, Roberts received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2018 from Wingate University and also went to work as a CVS Health pharmacist in Charlotte. Within a year, he moved into pharmacy management. 鈥淎s I started to do that job, I realized that I actually loved leading people,鈥 Roberts stated. 鈥淚 enjoyed setting a goal and aligning my team to achieve the goal. Essentially, like any leadership job, is you鈥檙e building a culture within your team.鈥

Noticing Roberts鈥 success, his supervisor asked him if he would be interested in taking on a larger role. Roberts, ready to apply what he had learned across a broader market, responded, 鈥淚 would love to try to extend my culture to 22 stores.鈥 He attended leadership courses, received his first assignment covering a market, and enjoyed the new challenge. 鈥淚 love the team aspect鈥攆inding out what motivates people鈥 and how to help them do their job well.鈥

CVS Health recently moved Roberts into a territory that includes the pharmacy in Boiling Springs located across the street from 蜜桃传媒-Webb. When he looks over at the campus and thinks back to when he was a student, he鈥檚 reminded of how unlikely the moment once seemed. 鈥淚 never knew I鈥檇 eventually oversee this one,鈥 he remarked.

Campus Events Highlight the Impact of Donors on the Student Experience

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擳hrough fun activities, storytelling, and visible reminders placed across campus, 蜜桃传媒 will celebrate Philanthropy Week on April 13鈥16. The observance is designed to help students understand how philanthropy鈥攖he voluntary giving of time, talent, or financial resources to others颅鈥攊mpacts their time at GWU. The initiative ends with Double Dawg Day, inviting alumni, families, and friends to join the GWU community in supporting students through gifts of every size.

Director of Alumni and Parent Relations Shannon Hovis helps coordinate the event. 鈥淓very gift to 蜜桃传媒-Webb tells a story of generosity and a deep belief in our students,鈥 Hovis asserted. 鈥淒uring Philanthropy Week, we celebrate the alumni, parents, and friends whose support opens doors, creates opportunities, and strengthens the 蜜桃传媒-Webb experience for every student.鈥

Throughout the week, students will explore how donor generosity has influenced the spaces, programs, and opportunities available to them at GWU. Outside select buildings, signs will share the stories behind those gifts and the individuals who made them possible. These stories reflect decades of commitment to Christian higher education.

For example, the Tucker Student Center stands as a testament to the generosity of Robert and Carolyn Tucker, who offered their gift with the purpose of glorifying God. The Stewart family鈥檚 longtime support echoes their belief that a university should embody excellence, integrity, and strong Christian values. The Godbold family invested in mission-driven programs and scholarships to strengthen the University鈥檚 Christ-centered mission, while Dr. Jack and Ruby Hunt鈥檚 passion for nursing paved the way for the Hunt School of Nursing.

The Dover family and their foundation supported several campus buildings and spaces, including the John R. Dover Jr. Memorial Chapel, a cherished place of worship anchoring the University鈥檚 Christian heritage. And in the 1930s, E.B. Hamrick provided crucial support that helped sustain Boiling Springs Junior College鈥攖oday鈥檚 蜜桃传媒鈥攄uring a time of need.

2012 Alumna Built a Career That Blends Pharmacy Expertise with a Passion for Helping Patients and Students Thrive

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擠r. Evan Moffitt Drake, 鈥12, of Fletcher, N.C., was nearing the end of her freshman year at 蜜桃传媒鈥慦ebb University when a conversation with her volleyball teammate nudged her toward an unexpected future. Her teammate shared that her goal was to become a pharmacist, and she planned to major in chemistry to get started. Drake had always liked math and science, but she knew little about the pharmacy field.

evan drake sciences alumni outcome

鈥淚 looked into pharmacy and then chemistry, and I talked to the 蜜桃传媒-Webb faculty,鈥 Drake told a group of GWU students during a recent visit to campus. Her presentation was part of the Applications of Chemistry Seminar Series, hosted by the Department of Natural Sciences.

After those conversations with professors, she chose chemistry as her major. Drake also took a job at a pharmacy to see the profession up close and discovered she genuinely enjoyed the work. 鈥淚 liked the science,鈥 she recalled, 鈥渂ut I also realized how much I enjoyed interacting with patients.鈥 That early exposure set her on the path that would eventually lead to pharmacy school, clinical practice, teaching, and research.

鈥溍厶掖-Webb was the jumping board for me,鈥 Drake noted. 鈥淗ere鈥檚 where I learned what I wanted to do. Here鈥檚 where I started the pursuit. I went into pharmacy school with the knowledge I needed. I felt prepared walking in, a lot more than some of my classmates did.鈥

Her academic preparation went beyond learning chemistry. The GWU faculty had already taught her how to work at a graduate鈥憇chool pace. 鈥淭hey challenged me; they taught me at a high level, but they expected me to perform at a high level,鈥 Drake said. 鈥淪ometimes that felt really daunting, and it was really hard. I hadn’t been challenged like that before. Some of my classmates had an easy undergrad, so to speak. They got a big wake-up call in pharmacy school when they had to study at night, study on weekends, do study groups, extra projects.鈥

Drake honed her study habits with the help of 蜜桃传媒-Webb professors. 鈥淚 learned to be more studious; I learned to be diligent,鈥 she reflected. 鈥淚 was able to grow in my discipline and organizational traits. So, you are getting prepared here. I can promise you that. You put your part in; they do their part.鈥

Another strength of the 蜜桃传媒鈥慦ebb environment is the faculty鈥檚 approachability. 鈥淚 learned it’s OK to ask questions here, because they made it a safe place for me to ask questions,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 was able to ask things that I didn’t understand, and I felt comfortable doing that.鈥

That same spirit now informs Drake鈥檚 teaching as an assistant professor in the Wingate School of Pharmacy, where she earned her PharmD in 2016. Her position also includes serving as a clinical pharmacist at St. Luke鈥檚 Hospital in Columbus, N.C. 鈥淚t’s common in pharmacy education to be employed by the university, but placed in a clinic or hospital,鈥 she explained. 鈥淵ou serve patients a few days a week and then teach a few days a week. Pharmacists are needed everywhere as part of a whole team and team-based approach to patient care. When I first went to pharmacy school, I thought I’d be working at a CVS or in the basement of a hospital. But it is so much more than that. There is a plethora of opportunities with a pharmacy degree.鈥

At St. Luke鈥檚, Drake serves as an ambulatory care pharmacist, caring for patients who walk into the office for help managing chronic conditions. 鈥淲hen they are diagnosed with a chronic disease and they need help managing that or a lot of education, they’re referred to me,鈥 she explained. 鈥淪o, things to think about would be like diabetes, high blood pressure, bone loss or osteoporosis, depression, or heart failure.鈥

Working with patients one-on-one deepened her sense of calling. 鈥淚 love having time with my patients,鈥 she said. 鈥淎 lot of them are older adults or veterans. Hearing their stories, building trust鈥攖hose relationships matter. Helping someone improve their health over months or years is incredibly meaningful work.鈥

Dr Evan M Drake Chemistry Alumna copy

In North Carolina, pharmacists can obtain a prescribing license. Working in collaboration with a supervising physician, Drake can adjust medications, order labs, and help manage treatment plans. In rural areas, where physicians are few, an ambulatory care pharmacist can dramatically support patient access and lighten the physician鈥檚 load. For Drake, it鈥檚 a way of ensuring patients get the attention, education, and follow鈥憉p they need. 鈥淪ometimes it鈥檚 just explaining what a number means or how a medication works,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hose five minutes of education can change the trajectory of someone鈥檚 health.鈥

Another part of Drake鈥檚 teaching position is conducting research, something she once thought would be too overwhelming. But through collaboration with her colleagues, she has found that she enjoys the challenge and is energized by exploring questions that directly affect patients and student pharmacists. She鈥檚 co鈥慳uthored studies including 鈥淏uilding and Testing a Team-Based Care Model in Primary Care: The Heart鈥2鈥慔eart Blood Pressure Control Partners Study鈥 and 鈥淕eographic Disparities in Glucagon Prescriptions Across North Carolina.鈥 Her work focuses on improving patient care, strengthening rural health outcomes, and understanding how students grow in clinical settings.

From her days as a student鈥慳thlete discovering a new career path to her current work as a teacher, researcher, and clinician, Drake鈥檚 journey reflects a commitment to service shaped by her time at 蜜桃传媒鈥慦ebb. Whether she鈥檚 helping a patient understand a chronic condition, mentoring a pharmacy student, or researching ways to improve health outcomes across North Carolina, her work is rooted in compassion and connection. 鈥淵ou don鈥檛 have to be just one thing,鈥 she told students. 鈥淵ou can help people in so many ways.鈥

Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs Nicole Waters Highlights the Influence of Mentors and the Importance of Women鈥檚 Leadership

Women's History Month

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擶omen鈥檚 History Month honors the mothers, mentors, and history鈥憁akers who shaped lives and opened doors for generations. At 蜜桃传媒鈥慦ebb University, that legacy continues through the women who lead across campus, including five members of the GWU president鈥檚 cabinet. Throughout the month, they will share their stories, reflecting on the opportunities women have today and those who guided them along the way.

Today鈥檚 column is by Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs Nicole Waters.

Career highlights:

  • 15 years in higher education: joined the faculty of the Hunt School of Nursing (HSON) at 蜜桃传媒 in 2011 and has served as a program chair, associate dean, and later served as its dean. She has also served as dean of the College of Health Sciences.
  • Doctor of Nursing Practice, 蜜桃传媒-Webb-University.
  • Master of Science in Nursing, Western Carolina University.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing, 蜜桃传媒.
  • Associate Degree of Nursing, Gaston College.
  • Diploma in Practical Nursing, Cleveland Community College.

Waters reflects on celebrating women鈥檚 history.

Women鈥檚 History Month is a meaningful time to celebrate the accomplishments and significant contributions of women. It offers an opportunity to reflect on the past, recognize the impact of women today, and inspire the generations who will lead the future.

Throughout my professional journey, I have been inspired and influenced by both women and men whose leadership, mentorship, and example have made a lasting impact on me. Dr. Sharon Starr (former dean, Hunt School of Nursing and associate provost for College of Health Sciences) provided a strong example of women’s leadership in action. Her guidance and example were both meaningful and influential during my time working with her.

Womens History Month Cabinet

Likewise, during the time I worked with Dr. Ben Leslie (former provost and executive vice president of Academic Affairs) he consistently supported and advocated for women leadership. He allowed an opportunity for women leaders on campus to be involved in a structured Women In Leadership (WIL) community. Because of his support in allowing this community of women leaders to meet regularly, the experiences had a lasting positive impact on me and provided an important network of encouragement, support, and shared learning.

Dr. Nicole Waters presents a student with an academic honor.

I intentionally support other women by being present and accessible, building meaningful relationships, and engaging in individual conversations are important aspects of supporting and mentoring others. Being intentional about sharing knowledge and experiences creates opportunities for growth. We all learn from one another, and when we take the time to share and genuinely care, everyone benefits.

The one piece of advice I hope young women carry with them beyond 蜜桃传媒-Webb is to be your authentic self, represent well, and be prepared to lead, influence, and co-create change. Never stop learning.
