Chamber Host Empowering Women Panel on March 23 By Office of University Communications On March 18, 2022 Three Women Leaders will Share Their Experiences and Offer Strategies for Tackling Challenges BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.鈥擳he Godbold College of Business at 蜜桃传媒 is partnering with the Cleveland County Chamber in Shelby, N.C., to present Empowering Women, a panel discussion, on March 23 at 5:30 p.m. in Tucker Student Center. Held in recognition of Women鈥檚 History Month, the event features three women leaders from various fields and also pays tribute to some notable women in GWU鈥檚 history. Dean of the College of Business and Instructor Mischia Taylor shared that as the sponsors began planning the event, their emphasis shifted. 鈥淲e started by calling it 鈥榃omen in Leadership鈥 with the discussion to emphasize how current women leaders are thankful for the pioneering women who paved the way for others,鈥 she explained. 鈥淭hen, we realized that we not only wanted to thank the women leaders before us鈥攂ut as leaders today鈥攈ow do we empower all women to be confident, faithful and anything they want to be? We changed the name to 鈥楨mpowering Women.鈥欌 Christine Cribb (photo by Beth Gudmunson) Jeanette Reeves Leah Burroughs The panel features: Christine Cribb, executive director of the Cleveland County Chamber; she has experience in campaign consulting and public relations.Jeanette Reeves, appointed first female chief N.C. District Court Judge in both Cleveland and Lincoln counties in 2013; after receiving her Juris Doctorate in 2004 from West Virginia University School of Law, she moved to North Carolina to work with Teddy and Meekins.Leah Burroughs, executive director of the JEM Project, an organization based in San Diego, Calif., dedicated to improving the welfare of children, empowering women, and preservation of wildlife and the environment. During the discussion, the women will be asked to share their own experiences and identify the people鈥攎en and women鈥攚ho have helped them overcome the hurdles they faced. They will also give strategies for tackling challenges in the workplace and reflect on what legacy they would like to leave the next generation. The program will also include a Q&A time with the audience. A few of the notable GWU women who will be recognized include: Fay Webb 蜜桃传媒 鈥 benefactor and namesake of GWU.Etta L. Curtis 鈥 Dean of Women 1909-1936, service award given at commencement named in her honor.Ollie Mae Cline Stroup 鈥 First woman to serve of GWU board of trustees, Stroup dorm named for her.Joyce Watkins 鈥 First African American student.Joyce Compton Brown 鈥 Professor emerita of English; instrumental in starting the University鈥檚 scholarly lecture series; Award winning poet.Sue Camp – Professor emerita of business administration, a GWU alumna who taught at 蜜桃传媒-Webb for 42 years, author of more than 25 books, and her textbooks have been translated into several languages.
